All hail the Ubuntu gurus…

Sat Aug 19

At 10:24 this evening I inserted the new Ubuntu 6.06 disk in my CD drive. At 10:43 I was using my new Ubuntu operating system. Now there’s quick and there’s quick, and I believe 19 minutes from nothing to a fully-working computer is pretty darn quick.

So, I implore you, try it (they’ll even send you free CDs) and prepare to have your eyes opened to a world of truly free software.

Snazzy calendars…

So you thought calendars were boring, did you? Think again. (Via Smiley Cat and That Standards Guy).

I like your blog…

Wed Aug 16

Rhys gets all hot and bothered about blogging. It’s a good job I quite like his blog or I might blog about how I don’t like his blog.

A thoroughly nice bloke…

Mon Aug 14

The founder of Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth, has been interviewed on Channel 4’s More4 News. He doesn’t often appear on TV, but I wish he did. He seems like a great bloke.

Thanks to the Ubuntu blog for making me aware of this.

Oh, and I couldn’t help but post another picture of our beautiful baby. This is, I firmly believe, the cutest thing I have ever seen:

The water shortage in action…

Sun Aug 13

To my shame I have been one of the many people who have scoffed when hearing about the “water shortage” the UK is currently in. However a trip to Ogden Water near Halifax, a reservoir and nature reserve, showed me how wrong I was. We’ve been several times before, but I was shocked to see the levels of water in the reservoir. Here are two pictures to illustrate the dramatic difference.

Ogden Water, 2006

Pretty horrifying, yes? SO after al the rain we’ve had (and in Yorkshire it’s been at least as rainy as normal) the water levels are still over 4 metres below where they have been every other time I’ve visited Ogden. A sobering sight, I think you’ll agree.
